Balsam fir is a keystone species, supporting many lepidoptera and other insects. It is also a deer resistant evergreen that usually reaches 35-60”. Although it thrives in colder climates, it is native to Massachusetts and is often grown as a Christmas tree or for holiday cut greens. It is wonderful cover for wildlife, and also creates great screening for a windbreak when planted with other species. Birds and squirrels enjoy their seeds and protection. “Host plant for 114 species of moth and butterfly larvae including: apple sphinx, fringed looper, imperial moth, Io moth, white marked tussock moth and more.” -Native Plant Trust
