Switchgrass is a native celebrity grass if there was such a thing. It is deer, drought, and salt resistant, holds its own as a hedge, meadow planting or some height in the garden. It can tolerate most soil conditions as long as it has sun, and it’s late summer seed heads on this upright beauty just take the cake. Panicum is a host plant for both moth and butterfly larval species, and is a great food and nesting source for both songbirds and other wildlife. I particularly love this grass once winter arrives. It glows right up until I cut it down each spring preparing for new growth.
